I have backed up several movies with DVDShrink. Depending on the size of the movie it takes me about 30 minutes from start to finish to. Recently however, all the backups are taking almost a hour. I tried a backup of a movie that I had previously backed up and it took much longer. Does anyone have any idea what could be slowing down DVDShrink?
Most of it comes down to how large that movie is. The more you have to compress it,the longer it takes. Then you throw in the extra enhancements like sharpness or smooth and that will definitely slow you down.
Without knowing your exact pc specs,how much of the movie you are keeping,and how fast you are burning and any enhancements being used, a few things to do is:
Defrag your hardrive often,keep spyware off of it-no porn sites-,check your dma if available settings on your ide's.Run your antivirus scan. No multi-tasking.That will help speed ya up.
Fragmented hard drive likely culprit. I defrag 3 times a week.The top dogs here de-frag every day.Dvd burning puts a a heavy toll on that hard drive.
Using DVD Shrink and Nero, I have done small dvd-5's-entire disc in under 20 mins. The larger DVD-9 take quite longer,especially in the 50% and below compression range.
I recently tried a movie that I had previously backed up. I took nearly twice as long. Something interesting happened when I put this movie in the burner instead of the DVD ROM drive (I have two DVD drives. One Sony DVD -/+ R,RW and a Dell DVD ROM). Two weeks ago they both seemed to take about the same amount of time to read and shrink the movie. Now the Sony is very slow but the Dell is like it was two weeks ago, very fast. Why would one drive slow down but the other work just fine? Thanks for any input.
It seems very likely that your burner has dropped into PIO mode. After getting enough read errors your drive drops itself into lower rate of transfer-PIO. You'll want to go into your device manager and uninstall the drive and then reboot. Windows should recognize the drive and install it in DMA mode, which is the good fast one.
I have noticed this with Friday Night Lights. Most my movie files shrink in like 30 min but this one is taking over 2 hours, same with Forgotten. I dont see how these movies can be much bigger or what not than ones I just did a few days ago.
