I have a Samsung sm 308b cd rw/dvd rom that does not detect a disk when one is inserted, cd, audio, or dvd.

Yes, I bought a memorex lens cleaner, but the drive won't recognize that being in either.

have you tried removing drive from device manager & restarting windows to let it install driver

yep, have removed it several times with device manager, rebooted, still striking out. All connections are good to. Firmware is T101.

how old is drive & does the disk spin or not

3 years old. Not used much. How do I tell if it is spinning. When I put a disk in it seems to act normal, lights come on makes noise. Just no access to the disk.

my guess is the drive tries to spin but fails.

put a disk that has a label on it into drive, remember orientation of label to see if spin or not

it moves a little bit, sometimes 1/2 turn, mostly less.

spin motor might be seized which means replace drive unless in laptop than get external drive
