I just purchased an iLo (i.e., Wal-mart) DVD recorder with an 80 GB hard drive. I want to edit out the commercials in my TV recordings, but the procedure for this recorder is slow and tedious.

Could I speed this editing process significantly if I got a DVD burner (probably an external one) for my PC and then some editing software? If so, what software would you recommend? Also, is there any disadvantage to getting an external burner?
