avi to DVD error?

I have read the guides and alot of topics about converting and nothing is working.

Each time I try to convert an AVi file using TMPGE I get and error. When I click the browse button to get the video file it get a message saying "cannot open, or unsupported" but it will open the audio file. I am not all sure about what to do. Is there anyhing that has to be done to the AVI file before you can send it to TMPGE...like spliting the audio/video files away from each other?

Any help or ideas would be really great.

Have you the proper codc installed on your PC? Use AVIcodec to find which codec you need (usually having DivX and Xvid is enough).
