VHS to .wma or .avi?

Hi, recently I tried to make a VHS into an avi file, as my friend created a music video using a VHS camcorder. He wanted it for a website, so I hooked up my DVD-recorder to my video player and got the video onto a recordable DVD+R.

What I want to do is rip it from the DVD and make it playable as an .avi or .wma file without any additional codecs so anyone can watch it without the need of searching for the correct codecs. Can anyone tell me the better software to use and a possible way to go about this?
