First off hello. Nice to be here. I'm definitaly not new to hardware by any means, but am not very experienced with burning/dvd-r in general. I just got a new 16X DL burner and am ready to start movie backup.I have a mATX nforce2 mainboard with only 2 standard IDE channels. Before, i had my HDD alone on the pimary IDE as master, and the regular DVD rom as master on secondary, then the CDWR as slave on secondary (pretty much the usual setup for a non-sata rig). Burns were fine. Usually CD to CD copies were fine. Secondary ide was listed as UDMA mode 2 a usual with a 80 wire cable.
Now to present. CDRW had crapped out on me. So i got the new DVD-/+R/WR drive. I plan on no disc to disk really anymore. My question is would it be better for me to leave the DVD-R alone a as do-it-all drive on IDE1 (secondary) as master and reading as DMA4 in the device manager, instead of once again adding a DVD ROM to the IDE channel again and bumping it back to DMA2? From my understanding through the years DMA2 would only be on consequence (slower than DMA4) if doing disk to disk copies. Since that is no longer the case wouldn't overall move rip and burn process with DVD-R have better performance with only one drive on the IDE channel under DMA mode 4? Since the drive i have reads CD's @ 48X and DVD movies @ 16X seems that i really and burns moves @ 16X (theoretical but practical 8- 4X for better quality) it seems that i really don't need another DVD ROM on the channel?
