File size discrepancies when spliting AVI with VirtualDub

I tried to split a 707 MB AVI file following the tutorial(http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/cut_avi_with_virtualdub.cfm) into 2 parts, the first part with the intention to fill a 702 MB CD. The resultant combined filesizes (700 + 5 =705 MB) is 2 MB less than the original filesize. I can understand if the combined filesizes are larger, but in this case, there appears to be shrinkage. Is there anything that I am doing wrong?

I am not sure this is it but I noticed that if I want to use the same keyframe as the end of first part and the beginning of the second and play the both parts back later I noticed a tiny bit of film missing. So I used the later keyframe for end of part 1 and earlier keyframe for the beginning of second part to overlap parts little bit and now all looks ok to me now

With such a size (so close to 700Mb) simply overburn a 80min cd or better still get a 90min cd and overburn that (Nero doesn't seem to recognise 90min discs but it will overburn onto them very well).

Just tried varying beginning of 2nd part to start earlier as suggested by czolg and "shrinkage" is reduced, however, there is still shrinkage.
Czolg, if you subsequently decide to recombine the 2 parts, do you just combine them as is or do you snip the start of the 2nd part to compensate for the original adjustment?
bang, the price differental between 90 & 80 min CDs does not justify the convenience.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem of shrinkage and/or loss of film?

if u are using Windows Xp use windws movie maker to combine the parts and to split them
and burn them on to 2 diffent CD
|

why not instead just get rid of part of the ending credits? seems like a waste of space, and then you can easily burn without having to overburn..

I never tried to re-combine the cut parts,even I can imagine it could be done. So far I riped one DVD, kept VOB's and played around with different encoder setings to get roughly 1390 Mb because I found the bitrate calculator doesn't work exactly and rate need to be re-adjusted (that explains variations with downloaded file sizes). If you can rip DVD again or still have original VOB simply re-do it with slightly lower bitrate, otherwise try burn it on one CD, as advised already

Another good idea is to try "squeeze" audio a bit to make total AVI size go below 700Mb using VirtualDub direct stream copy for video and re-encoding the audio (or maybe trying WMA codec instead of MP3)with lower bitrate. that is something I want to try myself as well.
