people say you have to patch online games, but what happens if you rent it or you arent going to play online with it anyway?

The 1st statement is true, and the second is partly true. Unfortunatly rental games are sometimes convered to sale copies, and if you are playing the same version at the same time someone else is you are out of luck. The patches basically give your back up its own "identity" if you will, so you can play them online and not have to worry about that.
