HELP!!!!! VOB to AVI

I've used a few freeware programs to try and convert my ripped dvd's (vob files) to one AVI file. The problem is that im running into is that after its done converting all I get is the movie in one AVI file with no sound.
Every program I use does the same thing.
What am I doing wrong????
I even followed examples and still having the same problem.
Does anyone know any real good programs out there that will do what I need it to do???
