I just got this burner and want to know how I should select my media. It says that it can burn a DVD+R at 16x but I want to know how I what media I should get for backing up my DVDs using DVD Shrink and Nero. And how would I burn a DVD+R at 8x instead of 16x. Also why couldnt I back up a movie to a DVD-R? I just dont understand the diffferecne between the two. THANKS

Dear friend CKY - I am assuming That you mean the NEC-3520 - So I will Proceed on that concept. You can make a 8x Backup -dvd in either of the DVDR- formats you would like as long as the media (your DVD-R or DVD+R ) supports 8 X burning on your drive! . There is no reason you could'nt make your backup in the DVD-R format. Most people stick with DVD-R because it has a slight advantage in compatability over DVD+R media in playback on dvd players. However if your dvd player was made in the last few years it will probably play both DVD-r & DVD+R movies . As one of our fellow afterdawn members said in a post nowadays dvd players would probably play a cheese pizza if the mozzarella isn't too thick LOL!!!!!! Seriously. It's whatever works good in your player ! Fuji Media- Made in Japan is good -because it's usually made by TAIYO YUDEN which is good stuff - I would stay with name brands to start with Sony/maxell /tdk/ Ritek/ VERBATIM ect. As for the formats differences in Practiality I can't see a playback advantage quality wise as long as were talking media of a comparable quality ! DVD-R was the First format and is used for Data & video recording mostly on computers with A few stand-alone dvd recorders supporting this format as well .DVD+R came later and is used more often in dvd stand alone-set top recorders especially ifthe DVD+R disc are rated for a record speed of 2.4X these disc can be recorded or played back on computer -dvd burners as well @ their rated speed. DVD+R media is also generally available in speed ratings comparable to DVD-R media . I would suggest that if you are going to give/distribute your back ups to others or play them on several different players of various ages I would probably use DVD-R for the slight edge in compatability that it has > If your only making disc for you and your players handle DVD+R backups well Then use whatever you can get the best deal on - It's a cop out I know but as they say in the hood (it's All Good ) I hope that this was atleast of some help to you ! am not as technically proficient s some of the other Great AFTERDAWN members Like you I am still learning too! But they are all a great bunch of people and will help you in any way they can ! WEll CKY my friend I wish you luck peace & happy burning - PEACE
