I purchased a V12 PS2 a few weeks ago (Jan. 8th to be precise), and have since discovered the plethora of various issues people seem to be having with them. Knowing the PS2 plays DVD movies, I went ahead and did exactly that - watched a DVD movie in my PS2. 3/4 through the movie, it started to skip. I opened the cover and inspected the underside of the disc, only to find that it was all discoloured -- as if it was burnt, and starting to melt. Shocked, I immediately turned the PS2 off and phoned Sony's Tech. Support Line. The guy on the other end was clearly as baffled as I was, and although he told me it could have been a 'freak of nature attack', I should try an old demo disc, then return it for an exchange if it happened again. I tried a demo disc, and everything was fine. The day of the incident, I had played for hours without problem.

As one can imagine, I've been searching frantically for answers on the net. I've read _many_ things about the V12 PS2, ranging from weak lasers to overheating. I plan to eventually modchip my PS2, however I need to ensure that my PS2 is in perfect working order before doing so, as such a task would void my warranty.

I am considering returning the PS2 for an exchange, although all games played since the incident have worked fine. The movie was Stigmata - I've read that movies produced by MGM are recorded on poor quality DVDs. This may be so, but there is no excuse for what my PS2 did to the disc.

So now I'm faced with all these potential problems with the V12 PS2. I read somewhere that recently manufactured V12 PS2s (i.e. > mid-Dec. 2004) don't suffer the problems the earlier model did. Would it be wise to wait for a possible V13, then get an exchange? Or should I exchange my PS2 for another V12? If I keep it, how long should I wait before chipping my V12? Also, is it true that my model should not suffer from laser problems as the older V12 does? I may even consider purchasing a V11.

Please help!!

Btw, did you smell some strange like plastic burning odor when you turn on the pstwo for the first time?
