I have read a lot that the PS2 reads -R dvds the best, and this is especially true on older systems.

However, by default, all pressed games (and basically anything you get at the store) are DVD-ROM.

My DVD burner has a bitsetting feature that sets all +R discs to DVD-ROM after it is burnt. In the world of DVD movies, this makes all the difference. For example, a DVD player that can not play -R/+R CAN play a +R bit set to DVD+ROM no problems.... plays just like it would a commercial DVD. This is done to ensure 100% playback on any home dvd player, even the oldest ones.

Question: Does this apply to the PS2? I havn't tried, but if my PS2 can't read +r, I would assume having the disc bit set to ROM will solve the problem, and in fact would be even more compatible than the praised -R.

I use DVD Decrypter for my backups,
I use +r and never have to change the booktype.
However,
There is a setting on DVD Decrypter that will
let you change the booktype.

I have never tried though (on ps2 games)
because i have never had any problems using it.
It is useful for movies though
(as you stated before)
