DVP 642 AVI Playback questions

Will the DVP 642 play an AVI file copied to a CD-R without converting to another format? The AVI's play perfectly in my computer but I can only view photos with the DVP 642. Every time I try to view the images on the DVP I get a Codec not supported error. I called customer support and was told that the updated software would play AVI's. I installed update and it still does not work. Not sure if this is important, but I am recording the AVI images with a Canon A95 camera. Is there a codec install that will correct this problem?
