I'm new at this backing up DVD process. I did make VCD a few years back but found the process too tedious and time consuming. I bought a DVD burner a few weeks back, found this wonderful forum and dove right in. I have DVD Decryptor, DVD Shrink 3.2, Nero 6.0 as software. I've been going along just great until yesterday. My normal modus operandi has been to analyze and rip the movie using DVD shrink and then compress the less useful parts of the disc and perform the backup. Then Nero would burn the image at 4X speed. Everything seemed wonderful. Well now the last 5 DVD's I've attempted to create keep failing during the burning process and I end up with coasters I don't need or want. I even tried switching to DVD Decryptor but it made no difference. Even just copying a burned DVD using Nero's copy DVD feature doesn't work. I get halfway done and the burn fails. Here is the last error log from Nero. It's all Greek to me but maybe somebody can tell me what is wrong.

First you need to edit out your serial number at the top before someone steals it!!!

Lets see where do I start. The blank media I've been using hasn't changed. They were all from the same 50 spindle stack of DVD+R's. I did drop the blank media on the wet pavement bringing them home ( the damn spindle broke) but I wiped them all dry and like I said the first 30 or so worked just fine. The DVD burner, an LG 4160 is less than 3 weeks old so I'm assuming dust isn't an issue yet. I did just manage to back up files from my HD ( data not movies) on that same blank media and it worked okay.

If it is dash R media, just ok. If they are +R use gas to burn them.

You have any idea how current is the information at that site you linked to? Hard to tell (though it was last updated October 2004).

And where did the information come from? I.e., how much testing, or experience, does it actually represent?

To be fair, the experience with that particular production of OPTODISC is not as bad as you imply:

http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=1734#comments

Back to proac: the root cause of the failure is the line in the log that says "Error reading data." I then noticed that you are doing a disc-to-disc ("on the fly") copy! Think about it. That points the finger not at the media you are writing to, but the media you are reading from.

So clarify this:
Quote:
Well now the last 5 DVD's I've attempted to create keep failing during the burning process ...
When you say "last 5 dvd's" do you mean five times trying to burn a copy of the same dvd, or five times trying to burn a copy of five different dvds.

For now, it looks to me like you are trying to copy a defective dvd. Have you tried ripping it to the hard drive first, and then burning? Wouldn't it be interesting to find that the rip to the hard drive fails too?

It was 5 different DVD's. That log report was from a disc to disc copy and the disc being copied was a successful copy of Anchorman on the exact same DVD+R's that I've been using. I had a few successful burns yesterday after I cleaned both drives with one of those CD lens cleaning discs. I also had 1 failure.
