I have tried to search all over the place for some fairly basic answers but I am very overwhelmed with all the detailed information. Apologies for the long post.
I am looking to get a basic understanding of the process of capturing video from a Hi8 camera and producing a DVD from that video.
My system is hefty enough to handle this no problem. I am running XP Pro on a P4 at 3Ghz, 1GB RAM, 2 x 80 GB drives, AIW 9800 Pro.
I got a "crippleware" version of Pinnacle Studio with the AIW and have since upgraded to Pinnacle Studio 9.
My aim, at least initially, is to capture video, tidy it up a little and then burn to DVD for safekeeping. In my first attempt at this I captured about 90 minutes of video, and attempted to put about 17 minutes on a DVD. I put a very cheesy menu in front of that. It took about 4 hours to "make movie" and burn it onto the disc which seems very excessive to me.
I connect my camera to the AIW breakout box and have so far captured using Pinnacle Studio.
How should I set up my capture to get the best quality and reduce "processing" time later on? Should I bail on Pinnacle and use something else?
Having captured my video I want to get rid of some the noise and correct brightness and contrast here and there. Maybe I want to shove in a transition or two but probably not. Having done that, I'm ready to burn my DVD. I understand (I think?) that this is a 2 step process, Authoring and Burning. I don't believe it should take my computer 4 hours to do this for 17 minutes of video.
Is there a more efficient way to do this than I am doing? I thought the AIW 9800 could do better than this.
As I said at the start of this post, I have struggled to get an understanding of the basic steps in the process and how best to take advantage of the tools I already have. I'm not a total bozo, I just find this whole video thing to be highly complicated and most of the posted answers are highly detailed and for more advanced practicioners.
Any pointers gratefully received.
Cheers!
It wasn't me ... a big boy did it and then ran away!
