I am using a Canon miniDV camera (MV700i Australian). The footage on a single miniDV tape piped directly to the TV looks good without any pause between scene/takes.

I then downloaded this miniDV tape into an external HD (firewire) via the laptop with Ulead VideoStudio 7SE (free). The different scenes on the one miniDV tapes are all in individual AVI files.

Then I used Ulead MovieFactory 2SE (free) to convert these AVI files into MPEG-2 with a simple menu.

Here're the problems/questions:

1. I can create a simple menu with MF 2SE but all the different AVI files become separate chapters which I had to rename individually. The program also download the different AVI files in reverse chronological order i.e. file #49 appears on the timeline first with file #0 last. I had to download each individual file separately. Very time consuming. Any other programs work any faster and more efficiently, preferably cheaper or free?

2. Converting these renamed files into MPEG 2 and then onto the DVD disc takes a long time on the P4 3Ghz laptop. More than 2 hrs for a 51 minutes tape. Any other programs that can encode AVI to MPEG 2 faster?

3. On playback of the DVD video disc, there's a very noticeable pause between the different chapters. Not a smooth flow as on the miniDV itself. There are 50 separate chapters. On playback, the player would drop back into the main screen after particular chapters. When I was transferring my analogue videocamera footage using a standalone Panasonic DVD Recorder, burning on to DVD-R and then using MF 2SE to create a simple menu, it actually convert into one single file which I then auto-create chapters. These played back on the DVD without any pause between chapters. Can I work around this problem?
