I received one for christmas with a 3 year warrenty ( yeh parents thought it was a good idea) so im not sure if I want to mod it yet and just throw that out the window.
1) Are these things prone to overheating? I have heard on the internet that they overheat.. whats that all about.
2) Modding, do you recommend to wait awhile and wait till all these kinks are out (like the laser burnouts)
3) What kind of mods are good, I found a no mod chip one..

is that even worth it or should you get a soldered chip?

I did have a problem with mine and SCE shipped me a new one. Not sure what the issue was. Sounds like either way you own one.
In regards to modding, so many options, I guess its preference.
With the slim model, swapmagic seems to be the simple approach.

I haven't had any overheating or laser issues at all (knock on wood) and I've had my ps2 I think for about 6-8 weeks.
I use SM3.3 and the slimtool and it works great.
Ultimately the type of mod you want comes down to price and warranty and preference etc.

The DMS4 pro is the best mod chip out there. Using swap discs is a personal preference; if you do not mind waiting and swapping discs around then the Slimm Tool with Swap Magic is your answer. If you would like your PS2 to behave like the original discs then a mod chip is your answer. Check out the DMS4 pro at http://www.mod-chip.com

Anyone heard of a diode fix for the slim ps2. I'm not sure what it is, but i've heard they need it.

You get the NEO Fix 2 with when you purchase the DMS4 mod-chip. The latest version has an IC to tell it to go into sleep mode when it is not in use (neat feature).

Well I have a three year warrenty on mine ( was a gift from my mom) so I dont really want to through that warrenty down the drain. So I guess the slim tool is the way to go. Question though.
Say I want to boot up a backup game with the slim tool. Do I just put in a swap disk, it tells me when to swap it out with the backup, then through in the backup disk? Does the drive stop turning which I do this or do I have to manually stop the disk from turning ( I wouldnt want to have burn out the motor for this)
Also does this slim tool and swap magic work for all games?

The swapmagic disc tells the ps2 to stop spinning and turn off the laser, so don't try and stop it yourself.
As for compatibility with games, as far as I know if you make your backups properly you are good to go. I've heard something about Sonic Heroes not working but I don't know. Also SM is only for ps2 games, ps1 games will not work. If you have a specific game in mind just search on it or ask, odds are someone else has already tried to back it up and has a solution or instructions.
