DVD+R woes

I just bought an RCA DVD burner/player (the one where you can burn movies off the TV) and the DVD+R's won't play in other DVD players, nor will they play in dvd rom's that read DVD-R and DVD+R movies. I'm hoping there is a way to convert them into DVD-R's. Any replies will be greatly appreciated.
