I apologize if this post is long but I will try to answer most questions ahead of time. I am definately a newbie (1 week).
When I try to burn with DVDDecrypter or Nero6 (trial), the programs stop responding as soon as I put in my media. The message box at the bottom of Decrypter says "Getting write descriptor" and hangs. If I can kill the program from Task Manager (not always), when I restart Decrypter, the program freezes at the "detecting SCSI/ATAPI devices" stage. After which point I can't even launch IExplorer. I'd like to point out that both Shrink and Decrypter work perfectly for copying the original disc to the harddrive. Before posting to the forum I wanted to make sure my burner was working, so I grabbed the ISO file from "Office Space" that I pulled using Decrypter and burned it using VERITAS RecordNow DX which came bundled with my system. Much to my surprise, it worked and I have a perfect backup of "Office Space". How come I couldn't burn with Nero or Decrypter? RecordNow DX doesn't seem to copy VIDEO_TS files into a proper DVD-Video format but that may just be my own lack of familiarity with the process. So as of now, I can only copy DVD-5 movies that I can make a complete ISO file from.
I am running on a SONY VAIO with a 2.4 GHZ P4, 512MB Ram, 80 Gig HD, and a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104 burner that Pioneer says is different in a bundled PC than they're standalone DVR-104. The firmware is updated for the burner. My OS is WindowsXP (yes, I know, W2K) and I downloaded Adaptecs ASPI layer. aspiinst.exe says it will only install for 98, NT, 2000, and ME. I checked Adaptecs site and they said for XP, run /install.bat XP32 from the START -> RUN command prompt for 32 bit versions of XP. It only installs ASPI32.SYS and WNASPI32.DLL and not WOWPOST.EXE and WINASPI.DLL. ASPICHK gives the message "Warning: ASPI component(s) missing". I also tried using aspiinst.exe for the heck of it and it installs the other 2 files. Adaptecs installation PDF says this configuration is for Windows NT. In addition, there are ASPIXP.SYS and WNASPIXP.DLL files that appear to be for the 32 bit XP that are not used in either install attempt. The reg_xp application does not seem to do anything. With the aspiinst.exe install, the ASPICHK says everything is working properly even though its the WIN NT configuration.
All of this is on top of a complete reinstall of XP and the bundled software that came with the VAIO. Im not one to give up a technical fight but I'm at the max frustration level. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated:)
