Question on steps to burning DVDs.

Can someone tell me the steps to burning a DVD? Before i rip it, what files do i need to rip besides the VOB files? I use SMARTRIPPER to rip it. Someone told me i have to create IFO's so it would play on a dvd player. So if anyone can help me out I would appreciate it.
