Anyone know of a good free tool for ripping DVDs to MP3s? Just want to copy a for concert DVD's to listen to while on the road.

Exceptionally easy to do; difficult to explain if you're not familiar with the particular software mentioned here:

Smartripper (free) - to rip whatever sound stream you want from the vobs. You get *vob* files though.

GraphEdit (free) - to get the pristine audio from the vobs, as a wave file.

AudioGrabber (not free, but there are six million free encoders out there) - to encode the wave files into .mp3 for playback on the road.

This is just one method of a thousand more.

Ok, let's start listing these ;-)

SmartRipper to rip the VOBs
DVD2AVI to create WAV file
CDEx (free) to encode and normalize WAV to MP3 using Lame (the best MP3 encoder)

Lame's good. And then there's BladeEnc. I think those are the two most popular. The free encoders are generally mods of Friffen-Fiffer-Foofer-Hoffen's (Fraunhofer's) orig acm codec. (I think). Since I registered AudioGrabber with the author, I got me a gen-u-ine Fraunhofer codec. I don't recall installing the codec manually, but as soon as I keyed in the correct serial number, it must have unlocked the original codec for me, because *poof*, there it was as an option.

WinAmp, MusicMatch Jukebox, .... all have freebie codecs.

Leaving red-book DAE....

What do you use to extract your own dvd audio, dRD? In your guide you mention that some folks have problems using DVD2AVI to get the audio. (What kind(s) of problems?) Doom9 also recommends disabling DVD2AVI's audio extraction in favour of using something else. I use GraphEdit, but for the newbie it might be a tad difficult to set up (the filters have to be registered) - and WinDVD, a commercial program (or something similar) seems to be needed. I get gorgeous, clear audio with it, with a respectable degree of necessary compession too.

When making vcds & svcds, do you really prefer Dolby 2-channel surround to standard 2-channel stereo? I only use stereo for playback, if I choose the surround option, it sounds exactly the same (in stereo I mean, both sound the same; I have no Pro-Logic decoder).
