Is there a way to burn games onto a dvd-r so that it's self booting and requires no mod chip?

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.
So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

i have a ps2 played around with action pro replay max evo (w'thumbdrive) and if you download cogswap and open the folder remove the boot.elf file from it load it to the thumbdrive open media player and play boot.elf you can then do a safe swap trick! and play your backups!

or u can aquire hdloader or freehdloader and install the hdloader.elf file on to the thumbdrive and purchase a ide harddrive and ps2 network adaptor and
not worry bout having a modchip installed

or just buy action replay maxevo and a ps2 network adaptor buy
an old 80 gb harddrive for like 50 bucks hook up a pc download your iso's download winhiip to transfer your bkups to the hardrive once thats done find any ps2 lieing around and you ready to play!!!!!!!

I bought HDAdvance 2.0 and it's a piece of cake. All you need is ... a HD (at least 40gb) and an online network adapter. From there, you just insert your HDAdvance DVD and wait for the screen to boot up. Put your game you wanna backup into the tray and convert it. After that, you can just keep the DVD in it, since you need to use it to play backups. It's a lot easier ... you don't have to use a modchip, and you don't have to try to figure out what/how/why to burn a backup DVD. I think it's an awesome innovation.
