Hello
I have looked all over the net and finally found this very informative board. I want to convert my MiniDV tapes to DVD. I have the firewire card and the DVD recorder (in my PC) but I need to know what software to use (hopefully free). I would like to go directly to DVD. I dont need to edit anything or create menus. If I HAVE to convert I would rather not go to .avi files because a 90 min. Mini tape takes up about 18 gig. and I only have a 30 gig. hard drive. but I still want good quality. Thanks in advance .....

Thanks so much for the VERY informative message. I've been messing around with TMPGEnc to change from .AVI. Now I have the question what to burn with. I guess I will look into TMPGEnc author for that. I run a 2.5 gig P4 processor.

Thanks again

and if you are like me that likes to edit every clip, and add transitions, Adobe Premiere is the best program in my opinion.

personally ive never tried the program you mentioned. adobe premiere takes a while for the person to get the hang of it, but once its fully manageble sky is the limit with all the effects it can do. the lighting effect is nice, audio effects, great transitions. to me it just works great for me. in my opinion to make editting easy, i capture what i want, than edit. its alot faster that way as if i was to capture my whole miniDV tape, and than edit. itll take ages, yes i do admit adobe premiere is very, very slow on starting up, but other than that its great in my opinion. but than again you go with what workgs best for you. afterdawn is a great place to post all of your experiences that you have had with different programs

i dont know about that. hey im not going to get into a disagreement between others opinion. i do it one way, you do it your way. same results in the end. it all just falls down to "Do you know what you are doing?"
