Illegal video stream/illegal stream format-tmpgnec

I'm a total newbie here. I just downloaded and started using tmpgnec yesterday. After 6 hours of converting avi to mcf (that's the only option), when I try to load the file, I get "illegal video stream". I continue anyway, but when I try to merge and cut, I get "illegal stream format". Again I continue, but when I try to run the file, it tells me that it is not a mpeg. I thought that tmpgnec was meant to convert avi to mpg. Why does it go to mcf? Also, when trying to convert a dvd movie that has already been ripped, should I use NTSC or NTSCFilm? Thanks in advance for any help.
