what's the best all around backup tool?

Hi all,
I've been using dvd x copy to create my backups for quite some time now, but just wanted to check in and find out if there was a superior option available, since xcopy has been gone for a while. I only have about 35 movies in my collection right now, I buy maybe 1 dvd a month, so I'm just looking for something easy to use like xcopy.. pop it in and hit go and come back when it's done.. the faster the better of course

These two programs are free, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter, and they are superb programs.
Nero is my choice to burn with, but you do have to pay for that one.

thanks -- I have DVD Shrink, but I don't think I have decryptor -- but shrink takes so long to read the dvd... even longer than x copy.. or is it just me?
normally on x copy it takes as little as 25 minutes, as much as an hour and 10 minutes to read the dvd.. copying is fast though, only about 8 minutes..
shrink usually takes an hour to read the dvd

have you checked in device manager to see if its in dma mode? This is one reason why it is slow.

oh wow lemme check
edit: err how do I check? I looked at both my dvd drives in device manager, and clicked properties, but didn't see anything about dma..
edit 2: I think I found it in the IDE controller area, it says both my drives are on Ultra DMA 2 - Ultra 33
is there a better setting? is there a way to verify drive speed?

Hi Bardie,
The best I have found is CloneDVD2 with AnyDVD.
They are updated when new types of protections are used. One thing I didn't like about DVDXCOPY is that it puts it's warning at the start of each backup
You can try the full working demo versions on:

DVD X Copy is without a question the best DVD backup tool available. It takes me about 45min. to an hour to compress and backup my movies with 4x discs. I have never encountered any problems with this software.

If you look around here on just about any forum you will see that DVD Shrink, AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter and Nero6 are the most widely acceptable software?s for your DVD backup needs today. They are easy to use and have extensive guides written on their use.
DVDxCopy can no longer handle the new encryption out on DVD's such as used by Sony for example.
The Forgotten, Resident Evil 2, Little Black Book, etc. etc. etc. cannot be backed up be using DVDxCopy by itself any longer! Can't be done. It is a thing of the past. We loved it when it first came out but the freeware listed above is far superior to it.

thanks everyone I really appreciate all the ideas, I'll try everything out
can you guys give me some input on the amount of time it's taking my machine to read the dvd's? it seems overly long, and I have a very fast machine with 1 gig of ram and an athlon 64 3500+ cpu..

That also depends on the DVD. If you use AnyDVD in the background along with DVD Shrink, a movie like the Grudge with 63 files and the extra encryption would take as little as 50 minutes at 8x for a full backup and using DVD Decrypter plus DVD Shrink could take about 62 minutes to burn a full backup. But both are with quality settings such as using maximum compression on everything except the main movie and also un-ticking the boxes for foreign languages not used. No skips or hang-ups any more if done right. No more of the 321 Studio?s warning screen and these copies can be copied again if need be.

funny you mention the grudge, I just tested AnyDVD and CloneDVD to backup my grudge dvd. I have to say I'm impressed, it succeeded where xcopy and shrink both failed. xcopy froze my whole computer, twice, at 25%. shrink gave me a CRC error at 25% through the preview. but any + CloneDVD breezed through it on the first try
about the time it took -- so do you think my copy times are good then? normally I assume about 45 minutes start to finish with xcopy, some dvd's take longer, and some take much less. copying the grudge just now took 46 minutes.
The burn doesn't take long at all, only 8 minutes on my burner, it's the read that takes a while. not a big deal since i only do this once a month or so when I get a new dvd, but still would like to shorten it if possible.

tell me mike521 ,i'd be interested to know if you had any dvd running when you used shrink. and if it's region 1 or 2 .i had no problem doing the grudge with shrink but the little black book was different as i'm region 2 any dvd didn't do an update to handle that till early this morning
