Audio sync problems after burning

I have a MPEG-2 file that plays perfectly fine and the audio syncs perfectly as well when I watch it on my computer with divx or powerdvd but when I burn it to dvd using DVDit, Nero, or even TMPGEnc the audio is off by a second. Any suggestions?

You need to author the audio and video separately.
The 3 programs you used, don't transcode audio very well, resulting in sync problems.

I'm having the same audio sync problem with NeroVision Express 3, but only if the file is too big to fit on one DVD and I have to split it. Can you recommend a better program? I'm new at this =) Also, Nero keeps telling me that my media is too big to fit on the DVD inserted but would fit on DVD-9. Where the heck do I get DVD-9's? I've checked around on the web but can only find the standard 4.7 gig discs.
Any help/advice at all is appreciated =)

Nerovision Express doesn't do audio well. It never has. Neither do most encoders, depending on source audio. Some are slightly better than others.
The best way is to rip audio from the source, transcode separately in Ffmpeggui or Belight, then remux during authoring, not before.
If you author a dvd that is too large for dvd5, just use DVDShrink so it will fit. DVD-DL (DVD9) disks are about $40 for 3, and compatibility rate is only about 30%, and that's IF you can get the layer break in the right place. Wait a year or so, until the technology improves, and the price comes down.
You also have to make sure your burner can burn DL disks, many cannot.
Do a search for "Dual Layer" and you'll find lots of places selling them. Verbatim DL+R's are about the best so far.

DVDShrink works great, but you already knew that :p
Any advice on software that will allow me to do the same thing with an .AVI file?

Encode your AVI to mpeg-2 using TMPGEnc, Mainconcept, CCE, Canopus or whatever.
Author the mpeg to dvd.
There are some all-in-one apps, but the quality may be suspect.

Hmmm....I downloaded TMPGEnc but it keeps giving me "cannot open or unsupported" messages for all my AVI files. I have watched them recently on my PC so I know the files are not corrupt. Am I making another silly newbie mistake?

Sort of.
Get GSpot and open your AVI.
Find out what codec it uses, and if it's on your system. If not, download and install the needed codec(s), restart, and TMPGEnc should be able to read your files.

Okay got GSpot and it says the codec is installed on the couple files I checked, yet they still won't open in TMPGEnc. I did restart and try again because I wasn't sure if GSpot actually installs codecs when you install it...it didn't appear that way but it didn't hurt to try.
Sorry to be such a pest but I really appreciate your help =)

Update...
I opened the file as audio source instead of video source the selected the system(audio and video) radio button on the side and it opened the file....it "seems" to be doing it's job. Will let you know how it turns out.

It's probrably a bad thing that it isn't displaying anything in the preview box at 15% done, huh? Big file, 8 hours to go before I see if it worked but I have the feeling I'm going to end up with an audio file and no video.
