Hi all

As a newbie to this game I thought I'd try backing up Black Hawk down to SVCD using DVD2SVCD. I'm now at 50% of the TPMGEnc stage and already its taken over 10 hours!! The running time of the film is 2 hr 18 mins.

I didnt really mess with any of the options in DVD2SVCD only to select Mpeg 5.1 audio and a 192Kbps bitrate for the audio. The Encoded_audio_1.aif is 4.1Gb and the current movie file (Encoded_video_TMPG_PAL.mpv) is 2Gb! I presume the next stage will be to incorporate the audio & video but how big will the final file be???

I anticipated burning to 3 Cd's but do you reckon it will fit on 3 CD's or should I cancel it now and try with some different settings? I haven't messed with the Bitrate tab in DVD2SVCD as I thought it would manage it itself anyway.

Is this the best method to use anyway? I've tried Smartripper - DVD2AVI - TPMGEnc with limited success already.

Any help appreciated. Cheers

Hiya,
I'll give you some stats from a "movie" I ripped last night (adult sort ;-)
Hardware =
Duron 800 MHz; Win XP Prof; 228 MB RAM PC133; XP SP1; Firewall locking out all web activity; Task Manager via CTRL/ALT/DEL to shut down anything else unnecessary OK!!????

1. Smartripper 2.41 took 24 mins to extract 8 VOB files which equalled 5.6 GB on the DVD!

2. DVD2AVI (v1.76) took 36 mins to produce the .d2v/mpeg1 file(s).....which is now a 1.8 GB or 1hr 42 mins MPEG movie (after TMPGEnc took 5'42mins). This of course needs TMGEnc to process & "splice" the movie back into the chapters + a menu in Nero (having made a note in Smartripper what each chpt was - to the milisecond!) Lord of the Rings (2'51mins film) took 8.40 hrs in TMPGEnc to create my final 2.1 GB MPEG movie.

Speed of processing does, in my humble opinion, rely on background processes like screensavers etc. being switched off & leaving the screen on AND minimising the active window. Remember of course if you fail to change the TMPGEnc default file (MPEG1 Standard) to VCD (MPEG1 VCD) & haven't set the template, a complex movie using MPEG2 audio will take an age (bruv in law on a PIII 450 MHz took 16hrs to do a 5.6 GB DVD!!!!)

So in summary, your machine SHOULD go faster IF background stuff is off and the movie is set to a simple VCD/MPEG1. One last thing...do you have ONE folder where all your ripping stuff is set to (ie. minimise disk scanning for the data files??)

Hope this is helpful as some form of reference point for length of time it should take!

Just re-read your request; using DVD2AVI have you followed the guide to decode the audio (not demux), set normalisation ON & used the 48>44 KHz reset as High? Dolby 5.1 will take FOREVER on SD100 RAM!!! You have opted for super-duper audio AND SVCD and to be honest...dolby .wav + VCD produces good looking films that don't take forever and really only look poor when there is a fast camera panning scene!
I'm happy to give you a detailed run-down and send a sample of LOTR (<1MB) using basic settings..Cheers, I'm off for a beer! Owj

Cheers Mooreo

Now on 55%!!!

Like u i've basically got nothing else running (except for IE6 of course), althou hard drive well overdue a defrag. Hopefuly firewalls blocking out everything else. The ripping and DVD2AVI stages were fairly speedy just this TMPGEnc bit!! Don't get it as it as the 'Stream Type' is Video only as the audio's already done. Need the 5.1 as got 6.1 speaker set-up.

Bit confused when using DVD2AVI as to whether it was grabbing the sound in 5.1 format.

BTW - currently following this guide http://www.doom9.org/mpg/dvd2svcd.htm

Any guesses how big the file Mpeg2 will be? Does the process also split the file?

Cheers mate

Hi there,
Here's the guide I used!
http://www.afterdawn.com/articles/archive/dvd2vcd_with_smart_dvd2avi_tmpgenc.cfm

LOTR was a 2.1 GB MPEG which I split over 3 CD's (2'51mins); the other films have been 1.4 GB MPEG's.

TMPGEnc IS a slow process as it crams the audio with the images; did you make a note of the chapters on Smartripper? This helps plan which bits can go on one CD and the others on CD2! Bruv in law's new laptop (256 DDRAM + 2.1 GHz Athlon) did a 550 MB file in 13 mins - my box took 5 hrs in TMPGEnc to do a 1hr 42mins film.
I would expect your machine to be faster though; I think tweaking DVD2AVI to ensure Normalisation is ticked; have 48>44 Khz selected at High and go for Decode + Dolby Downmix next time! See the guide link above.
Keep it up fellow newbie - what doesn't kill ya can only make us stronger ;-)
