dell s-video to tv... black and white

i have a dell 600m notebook with a s-video output, when i hook it up to my tv the screen becomes black and white and there is no setting to get it color. there is however a screen on the laptop and a screen on the tv. please help!

p.s. is there a way to get sound from the laptop if you don't have the wires??
