Motorola V980 (Vodafone Live!) does not connect to PC

Today I received the USB cable I picked up on eBay for my Vodafone 3G Motorola V980 phone. The cable itself is OK. When I plug it into my Keyspan USB server, my phone gets recognized nicely as Motorola 980.
But that is where the fun ends. Mobile Phone Tools does not detect my phone. Now did I do anything wrong when I installed the various bits and pieces of software? Or.... is Vodafone playing me and other V980 users a trick, in having made it somehow impossible to download files - and thereby photo's - to your PC where Vodafone wants you and therefor obliges you to use (and PAY for) their network by having you "MMS" any pictures to other mobile users? I mean, the transflash trick works fine so why does not the USB cable...?
