Whats the latest with this new anti copy protection technology called RipGuard being used by the Macrovision compny that people are talking about now? They say almost most of the software used out there used to copy dvds now will not work anymore because they are doing something different. Do we know if shrink and/or decrypter will still work when it comes to copying the protected movies? They say this new technology will be coming out late in 2005 and will be used on the first high definition dvd video. Any info. will be helpful!

I too would like to more.
I haven't studied this in detail yet as to think how Macrovision RipGuard might work. But am I of the belief that if all existing DVD players can read the new DVDs, why can't some (new?) simple software do it.
Any other comments?

Im sure the people at Slysoft will break this one too
They have beat everything else to date
I wouldnt loose any sleep over it someone will break it
If you can read it theres always a way to dupe it

I read about it here http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1765039,00.asp and I think at www.techreport.com too and ran over here to see if anyone had mentioned it so far. Bye bye fair rights use? I don't think so. As Vedas, somebody is going to find a way around. It sounds like every movie title will have to be, um, deciphered individually though. Personally, I wouldn't really mind that arrangement. Prevent as much illegal activity as possible while it counts the most, and after a little while after someone has 'deciphered' the title, I can make a 'use' copy or put it on my HTPC hard drive and put the original in archival storage. I'm just worried about how long it takes for each title 'fix' (or some single, foundational 'fix') to come out. The people in my house can destroy a DVD or CD faster than you can say "nothing flat".

What you gotta love about this one is Macorvision has NO CLUE how many DVD players it may not work with. Great marketing, lets piss off end users. And as the Afterdawn and BBC articles contend, Piracy is not an end user issue. It's Piracy groups. All this new scheme will do is give Piracy groups new steam and piss off may end users who copy for backup, or in my case, copy to be played in the car where most things don't last anyway.

In the end we are all worrying for nothing. The only reason they come up with these copy protections is too stop pepole in foreign countires with like 100,000 computers to mass copy titles and sell them in the st. This is done alot in places like China and South East Asia. It is not done much in the US or Europe or on a much smaller scale. These protections I don't geel are going after people who backup dvd's for personal use. The bottom line is copy protections only can last for a short amount of time before they are hacked. You are releasing these encyptions to millions of people. In the end its just a matter of time. Then wait...when dual layer media gets cheap enough... we can get perfect 1:1 copies of disks.

I agree with that. Just most worry they may be in the same boat as Dave (Direct TV) when he switched to the P4 card. No rebound there yet. Still, DVD has a more deligent base. We will see.
