The reason Northerners don't use rhyming slang is because cockneys use it.

We don't wish to be associated with a bunch of lager drinking nancys.

Sorry Lethal, I couldn't resist!

LMAO

LOL, I'd never get into battle with these northern monkeys..

You'll find anyone British wants to claim London/cockney/chavness. They say they don't but they do.. just ask carefree, herbsman, or Mik3h.. the poor lads could only wish they were Londoners. I highly doubt permiggs is a Londoner too, as if he were, he'd know that the rhyming slang he used is rarely spoken of!

touché!

[edit] by the way, pulsar.. 1am? I thought you had a "life"!

That is just a vicious rumour I pass around, it is a vain attempt at convincing myself that I do have a life! LOL!

Northern monkey, is that not derived from the monkey hangers of Hartlepool?

I typed "Northern Monkey" into google & ended up on this site, I found this little tale. It is forking hilarious!!

That thread is part of "Barrys' gold", it is worth a glance at some of the other threads too, I thought we could be harsh on newbies, but this lot take the biscuit! Just my cup of tea! LOL!!

Me a londoner?!? LOOOL - Far from it!

But my mrs is a proper East End cockney girl through and through. She can have a full conversation in slang that i never heard of before! And trust me, i do know quite a few of them! Her whole family still live (...and will die) in London, and use slang on a daily basis...

What i wrote above was some of the ones that got me thinking when i first heard them... That was the very sentence my mrs wrote on a paper when she tried to 'teach' me the hard slang... Still didn't get it tough... lol

what a great movie.

Permiggs - knew you weren't a Londoner mate. You can tell when someone is "putting on" the cockney, as they exaggerate it and use rhyming where it is hardly ever used :-)

Many years ago, I'd started to read "A Clockwork Orange" ... the novel came complete with a cockney dictionary. I gave up trying to read it as I had to look up every other word; I found it impossible to read (although in those days my own English left something to be desired). Eventually, I rented the movie (Malcolm McDowell if memory serves). I have no idea if the cockney in the book or movie was genuine but it was facinating. I also run into it from time to time on BBC programming aired in the US. I don't know what it is but I could listen to it for hours.

I also worked with an English cop here in Philly who was part of some exchange program; I don't know if it was cockney but it sure wasn't the queen's english!

Pity the site doesn't have a sampeling of people's voices; it would be neat to try and place peoples' posts with the sound of the voice.

Well, it depends... Sometimes when i visit down there, they slang every other word which makes me feel a bit out of place...(in other words, it pi$$es me right off...) I know a lot of them, but there's soo many different variations to the same rhyme that you do end up loosing yourself sometimes...

But to be honest, i find it easier to understand cockney slang than geordie... That's probably what that guy was Gerry... Now, that is another language!

Hey Gerry, where's your mug?

@ Lethal, not seen Lock, Stock for a while, but I do vaguely recall the scene you mentioned.
I think that he was referring to the 2 scousers who nicked the guns.

I remember Dick Van Dyke doing a "cockney" accent in Mary Poppins, that was a laugh!
