DMA Didn't Work!

I have a newly installed Sony DWD22A Double Layer DVD±RW. I have ripped and burned a few discs with good success. I took the advice of some other posts and checked my IDE settings for the burner and it showed PIO mode, so I changed to DMA When Available, in hopes that it would improve performance in burning. I cranked up the software again (DVDD and Shrink), and proceeded to get 5 write errors and 5 coasters. I changed back to PIO, and no problems.
I understand that DMA is the recommended setting, but it didn't work for me .
Anyone got some thoughts?
