Hello - I'm hoping someone can give me some advice!!!!

Just recently purcased an AOPEN Dual layer dvd burner from tiger direct. I'm somewhat computer savvy but this has gotten the best of me!!!!

With the burner I also bought some DVD-R's ofcourse to try out my new toy. I have tried numerous times to back-up my own personal dvd movie but have failed miserably so far.

I downloaded a dvd decryption program and that works fine. With that I can use my Nero Recode 2 that came included in my Nero Software suit. It recodes everything down to fit on a 4.7 gig disk. Then I proceed to burn and it gives me the option to copy at once or to write it to a temp file on the hard drive and the burn to disk in order to ensure that it meet the requirements to fit onto the 4.7 gig disk. I always do the 2nd option I just stated. Well I started failing right off the bat!! At first it wouldn't even actually burn any of the disk and about half way through it would kick it out with an error. You could look at the disk and there wouldn't be any references to being burned like you would normally see on a home burned disk if you look at in the light just right. So I fidgeted with some setting and made sure I was burning at no more than 4x's speed and proceeded to try again and now with the last couple or three frisbees, it lets it get within a couple of minutes of finishing and then kicks it out with an error. This time you can actually see where it has burned on the disc and there is still about a half inch of unused space at the end.

In the mist of all this I decided to try one of the DVD+RW that I got for the DVD recorder I have hooked up to the TV. It completed the recording, but will only playback on the computer. Neither of the DVD players on the TV. Including the recorder that specifically requires DVD+R or +RW.

So then I start reading about how some media is downright junk. Being that I bought the cheapest on the shelf, and not a brand that i'd ever heard of, I figured I would go and by some good ones of a different brand and try that. So I get some Sony DVD-R from Kmart and try that and I'm now back to square one...it kicks it out at the beginning.

I'm dying to know what the deal is!!! Is there a setting I don't know of or did I buy junk DVDs twice? I've even downloaded and installed the latest firmware, whish was a newer date than what came with the hardware, and obviously that didn't help. Attatched is the log file for the nem sony disc...maybe someone can make something of that!!

Don't mean to jump ahead of the gun here but, I noticed a setting in the properties of the drive in the device manager. The region setting is set to 0 could changeing that to...ooooohh I don't know, maybe....United States, make any difference? I don't want to unknowingly play with this setting because for some reason it only allows 5 changes and it locks in on the last one and there is NO way to reset it for some reason?

Thank You

First of all if your drive came with Nero more than likely it's an OEM version of Nero and I have had a bad experience with OEM versions of Nero. And why not use DVD Decrypter to burn? I had just read a PC magazine article on an up date of SP2 that affects DL burning with Nero. And I personally like Nero but I would back-up my disc and it would freeze when watching it with my player.use shrink to compress or, if you doing a DL just use DVD Decrypter read as ISO and burn .ISO file.Don't use cheap discs with bad dye speads and pin holes in the dye.Update your firmware, I bet you that will help with the discs you are using. www.cdfreaks.com
