LAG Chip?

A friend told me that the ps2 has a LAG chip or something like that which controls the tray and the lens of the console. And that when you mod the ps2 you need to protect it so it won't be damaged. If that is true, will that affect the performance of the ps2 reading backups?
I have the messiah universal modchip

I'm new in this so please let me know what you know about this
