Best method(s) to rip DVD movies to SVCD multiple CD's

So I have checked out vcdhelp.com and I have tmpegenc and DVDx v1.8 installed. Also have Nero v5.2.7.2 for burning the SVCD.

I really need to convert straight to SVCD format since I don't have 8 Gbytes free.

I have 256 Mbyte, AMD K6-2+ running at 615 Mhz and a lite-on 24x10x40x drive.

The thing I am unsure about is how do you go about easily ripping the DVD to say 2 files for burning to 2 CD's? I am unsure how to split the ripped MPEG2 file.

Also are there any easy ways to fit the movie to SVCD say on 80 minute CDR's which I have a lot of to get the best video quality?

I realise you can define VBR on TMPEGenc and set the max and average encoding rates but this is a little hit and miss and if you screw up you can waste a lot of time as the whole process is very time consuming.

Also can you retain the track/chapter info for navigating the SVCD or do you just have to use FF/RW and time search to move around?

Finally I am thinking of upgrading my system since the MPEG2 encoding is very time consuming, any recommendations on CPU/motherboards that will give me a real performance boost? I don't usually get the bleeding edge of technology, preferring to get cheap CPU's which overclock well.

Unless I misunderstand what DVD2SVCD does I need a lot of disk space as the first stage is to rip the DVD to disk before doing the MPEG encoding to SVCD format.

Using DVDx, TMPGenc and the video server prog you can go directly from DVD to MPEG2 file compatible with SVCD, say 700Mbytes for 80 mins. This is very cool.

Actually by poking around this group some more I discovered that TMPGenc has built in tool for merging and cutting MPEG2 files, which can be used to split the output to chunks suitable for burning to CDR. The disadvantage I see is that you have to do some manual calculations to do the split and it looks like DVD2SVCD figures that part out for you.

Anyway I have a workable solution for my setup, someday I'll get a bigger hard disk

Yeah, you're right about the space requirements -- SVCD.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2SVCD requires tons of free space while your solution is suitable for smaller HDDs. SVCD.cfm" class="forum_link" target="_blank">DVD2SVCD just has some advantages that you can't easily achieve other ways, like real SVCD subtitles, ISO image creation for discs (and those files are almost _exactly_ one CD each), etc.
