Yes u have to have a mod chip to able to play ps2 backup games.
there is no other way except playin ur oringinal

PS2 chip installation looked pretty complicated to me and I didn't want to risk it so I just went with a flip top and swap magic. With the older PS2 the flip top almost offsets the extra time you spend swapping discs.
