DVD to avi for a beginner - how

Total beginner here hoping this is the correct forum.

I have family video on DVD and I want cut out some sections and edit them and use them in a combined video. The source DVD has 2 files on it:

video_RM
video-ts.

What software to a use to convert to another format like avi so i can edit it in Pinnacle or Ulead?? Any suggestions on which how-to guides?
