I downloaded a couple of movies in AVI format but, when I opened it in WMP it just plays as a song. I know Its video format. i'm trying to burn it to dvd. can anyone help.

Sounds like you could be missing some video codecs.Download GSpot to see what you need to play the video.

I have another question. After I get it up and running are there any other steps that I need to do before burning it to a dvd cd?

Yes,you need to convert your avi's to VOB files, so they can be burned on a dvd.The easiest program that ive found to do this is vso divxtodvd.(free)
You just add your AVI,and it converts it to VOB files, and if you have copytodvd, you can even have it autoburn with that program.

you can use Nero vision express to do that
