dvd burning speed reduced

Hey anyone a problem with the burning speed of there drive. I am using a 4x media on a 4x drive but it only writes in 1x mode. hardware is liteon 411s and software is nero express. In the past it was fine but now it writes at the slow speed.
Please help if you can.

I would check if DMA is enabled or PIO is enabled.
To check right click my computer, then properties, then click the hardware tab, then click device manager. Then look for something like IDE controllers and double click to expand the view. Then find your primary IDE channel and right click on it.Then click properties, then click the advanced settings tab. You should now see what transfer mode your device is in. Make sure it says DMA if available. You don't want PIO only mode. Do this same thing with your secondary IDE channel also. Hope this helps...

Yeah bbmayo you beat me to it. Good job with the pic. I think that will help many people. Much easier to understand than my old fashined way:)

thanks for the info. ive tried this. ithink it has more to do with what your copying and the media.i actually emailed Nero over this one.the way i understand it is the firmware and software work together to determine the speed.i dont complain much when i burn and it comes out good.even if its at 2.4x or 16x.

If you did the above there is still one more step you can try...
CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can revert to using PIO mode, despite
being set to use "DMA if Available." Here's how to make Windows XP
redetect the DMA capabilities of the drives.
This behaviour occurs with the following conditions:
-Windows XP is the operating system (should be same for 2K)
-A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive, which is known to support DMA mode now works
only in PIO mode.
-The drive controller is set to use "DMA if available" but reports to be
only in PIO mode.
Following is the mechanism that has worked for me, please try it at
your own risk, it involves hacking the registry:
1. Open RegEdit
2. Find the following KEY:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\
Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x
3. The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on.
4. Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values:
MasterIdDataChecksum
SlaveIdDataChecksum
5. Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect DMA settings.

Ok guys.

Just to mention also, the media that I was using was TDK 4x and GQ 8x brands. Do you believe that it could be the media of which one of the others members indicated?

Hi All,
Ok I was able to reset the drives to dma as instructed below. But this did not fix the problem. It still writes in 1x I forgot to mention the the media that I was using is tdk dvd-r at 4x speed. I had no problem with the same brand tdk dvd+r at 4x. Others used were GQ brand at 4x dvd-r of which did not have the problem either. I do have some tdk dvd-r brand at 2x it writes at 2x with no problem too. I am starting to lean on that it is the media that is doing this. I have another question, the media indicates 4x or 8x or whatever. Does this mean that the media can support up to 8x and below or only 8x? I was thinking that it supports up to 8x.
Moreover, maybe there is a way to force Nero to run at top speed. Is there such a feature / does anyone know can this be done.
Any help is appreciated.

One time I had a similar problem. Nero would only burn at 1x when it was set to burn at max speed. I could burn 2x if I told it to run at 2x speed, but would not burn at 4x no matter what. I had a virtual drive on my PC. So when I got rid of it everything went back to normal. I was able to burn at 4x again. I really have no idea why this happened but if you have a virtual drive you might want to try getting rid of it just to see what happens.

Hello, I am having the same problem for the last couple of days i can only burn at 2x no matter what i do, i have checked and both drives are in dma mode i have tried all the above things i am using the same verbatim media that i have been using the whole time any suggestions. thanks ahead of time.

a much simple way of solving this problem is to update your drives firmware... worked for me as i had the same problem!!!
