I'm not sure if I understand the question.
If youare trying to use a program called DVD Calculator, (of which I am aware of), it does ask you for these values.
Extras :- This only applies if you are ripping the "extras" on the DVD (you know, "the behind the scenes type footage". If youare doing "movie only" then extras is 0.
size of VOBs :- This means the total size (in bytes) of all the VOB files you are about to work on. You will need to go into Windows Explorer, right click each files and look in properties and the the value in bytes. Add ALL the VOBs together, and there's you're answer. (same applies to extras if you are using them)

i know this all sounds daft but am new to info edit & rempeg am using 40 easy steps guilde
question: when am giving my value that DVD-Calculator gives me can you alter it & how much?
what i mean is if i halfed the value it gave me will it compress the data even more.

Are you encoding to CD level ? otherwise, I would highly recommend the bitrate calculator on the doom9 site, under downloads>calulators>show me more.
It's called "DVD-R Calculator V 0.2 by mhammer"
when used correctly, it will tell you the scalefactor to use in ReMpeg2. Very good.

its the calculator that getting me stuck
if i had an exsample it might help
let you know whats happning.
on the calculator it says:
size of extras bytes
size of vobs bytes
lenght of movie s
avge bitrate bit/s
---------------------------------
lenght of movie--------i get off rempeg2
avge bitrate-----------i get off rempeg2
size of vobs-----------am told to add all its file sizes from its properties
(do i enter the hole number when added for exsample:500,234,333,34or only part of it(remeber ive just made this number up for now)
size of extras -----------am told this means the extra shite the dvd holds that no one watches anyway so i just type the number 0
and to make things worse is at the bottom of the caculator that says scalfactor %
what part of the number you get do you take as your %
look am really stuck and sorry i must sound like a real thicky.

Looks like you are just about there. When you enter all the values (you seem to have the correct understanding, click "Calculate"
The Scalefactor value should be in the region of 60-90% anything less tahn 60% will result in a poor quality picture. The higher the value the better the quality.
Go for it.
Oh and by the way, Rempeg2 does take a long time to re encode, can be 24hrs plus. What type of processor are you running ?

Answer: 1.8ghz prosesser
thanks about the 60%-90% dident know that
rempeg2 takes about 11hrs to 12hrs
but when done it gives the finished dvd-r
autorun + subtitles + no jerky picture ( picture is nice and smooth)
(using 40 easy steps guilde)
i would like to use TMPGEnc-Plus
but it doesent give the same result
when trying to Author m2v with infoedit (encoded with TMPGEnc-Plus).picture crashes
the old way i was doing it was
tools used:
dvd2avi (forced picture)
TMPGEnc-Plus (video only: takes about 4hrs)
ChapterXtractor
Spruce.DVDMaestro.v2.9
result: 100% Quality piture but picture jerky when theres a lot of action (no subtittles no autorun so your snooked if you get a film like starwars II )
i was reading some pages a wee while ago and i came a cross some one saying that rempeg2 will not copy some film makers like warner bro. i cant remeber the rest but is this true ?
they say that the picture freezes up ( crashes )

Yes, it's true about Rempeg, it can cause a few problems, especially with Warner Brother movies, that's the main reason why I moved away from it.
But even this problem can be overcome, but I was a bi lazy, so thought if I've got to learn even more I might as well go the whole way, so upgraded to CCE and use Spruce Up to re author.
Give it a go.

I use ver 2.51.
Quality is excellant (can't spot the difference)
Cost is quite expensive (but worth it)
Checkout www.doom9.org where they have a specific section dedicated to CCE (and it's associated problems)

For a good basic guide, goto : www.doom9.org
then "Guides" section It's called something like "getting the best out of CCE"
It's a bit more complicated than it needs to be. You don't have to do the 2nd pass bit, if you don't want to.
Using CCE, I can re encode a 2hr movie in about 1 hr 45 mins.

ok dude am going to take the plunge
tryed rempeg2.
seems like it only likes serting types of video and like you said problem can be overcome, but am to lazy to go down that path especially when its taking all most 12hrs.
had a look at the cce guide going to put it down on paper and have a look at it.
if you like ile keep you informed and if you dont mind.
i might look for some help when stuck.

OK, if you REALLY want to go for it, this is what I use.
Smartripper
DVD2AVI
AviSynth
CCE
Spruce Up
Nero
Get ALL this programs install them, make sure they work (use small file sizes to save time)
It will take you a few weeks to assemble this lot, but it works.
Good luck, keep us all posted on your progress.
