New PS2 HDD help please

I already have the FFXI PS2 HDD and I just discovered it detects my mod chip so it won't let me boot my bootleg copy of HD Advance. Would I be able to connect another HDD to my PS2, such as an external HDD. I have been told that it has to be a Maxtor and I have found a pretty decent price on a 120GB Diamondmax Plus 9. Would this work?

From what I understand, it doesn't have to be a Maxtor, they just seem to be the most compatable. Here is a link to a list of compatable hard drives:

Since I don't have a mod chip or a bootleg copy of HDADVANCE I'm not sure if it will work or not.
