Ok, was very happy.
Used my hacked $30 lite-on drive to rip at unbelievable speeds for past 10 months and DVD decryptor.

Burned with separate plextor drive, also very fast.

Tried to back up some audio books on CD using windows media player (XP) and noted they were reading at dirt slow speeds. Went back to DVDs and now I rip at slow speeds!

My plextor rips faster! DId something happen or did the Lite-On drive finally wear out just now?

Need some more details...
Are you running XP? Its a long shot, but you might be burning in PIO Mode. XP automatically switches to PIO mode after 6 cumulative (or consecutive) errors while ripping. Its much slower because PIO runs off your CPU while ripping, while DMA mode, which runs off Firmware and software, is much, much faster (like 90 minutes versus 20 minutes to rip). You can check what mode your burning in by going into Control Panels, then System, then Hardware, then open up device manager. Open up the IDE/ITAAP folder, and look at the folder marked Primary Driver (In this case, your lite drive will probably be considered the primary, and the plextor the secondary. Look under Advanced settings... If it says PIO Mode at the top, that could be your problem. Uninstallthe primary driver, and then restart (You may have to do it a few times before XP properly reinstalls it) and then it will be temporarily fixed. However, problem will re-occur continually until the registry editor is correctede. Go to The windows site to find out how to fx it. Hope this helps
