subtitles not loading?

Okay so I have a movie along with its subtitle files (.idx and a .rar containing a .sub file) everything follows the proper naming convention, ie.
Name_of_the_Movie-cd1.AVI
Name_of_the_Movie-cd1.IDX
Name_of_the_Movie-cd1.RAR
Containing the file Name_of_the_Movie-cd1.SUB
and I have direct vobsub 2.33b installed.

The subtitles do not load unless I unpack the .sub file from the .rar archive, Which would not be that annoying except when stored on a cd there isn't enough room to leave the .sub file uncompressed. I'm pretty sure there is a way for the subtitles to load without unpacking them but i can't figure it out. Any ideas/setting I need?
