Nero Trial Version

I downloaded the Nero trial version but when trying to use it I am asked for a serial number. There isn't a serial number for the trial version so how does one go about trying it out before purchasing it?
Is Nero really a good program and does it really work?

I am tired of downloading programs and then find out that they don't measure up to what is claimed. This is a hot market, it's a shame that none of the software makers can get it right.
All I want to do is transfer VHS and DV to my computer via firewire and then burn to DVD. I am not interested in music cd's or mp3 or background music.
