Repairing my DVD Player

I have the Yelo player, cant remember the model number, but anyway I took it apart cos I think the lens is on the way out. Only to my horror I found that the DVD drive inside looks like a normal PC one.

My friend opened up his Bush player on my discovery and the same in there different drive but a computer one, none the less, even had the headphone socket on the front of the drive, IDE cables, looks like a normal drive.

You should know where this is leading by now, I shoved an LG drive in the dvd player out my pc, which plays my region 2 discs, but not region 1 or 4 that I have. Do you think this is because the drive is locked to region 2, which windows does so nicely for us. I tried flahing the firmware and still it cant play region 1 from the DVD player.

I just wondered if anyone ever tried to do this as a cheap way of repairing their settop player, as opposed to buying a new one, since I can get a new drive for less than £30(about $50).

I looked up the model number of the existing drive, its a Key-tech DV-2HP dvd loader, dunno what this means, and what makes it different from a dvd-rom drive but still, there must be something different, I guess it lets the controller deal with the region coding; only thing to try next is putting the dvd-loader in to my PC to see what happens the other way round.

Anyways I basically need some advice so that I can try and rig up some dvd-rom in my dvd-player if nobody has any reasons why I shouldnt
