i found out with many discussions that dvd-xcopy will automatically put a dvd-9 on one dvd-r disk if the movie files and sound track and title selection files is less than 4.7 gig or give you the option. Anyway. if it is not it will continue to put the movie on two disks. why is it then that programs like dvd decryptor can do it even if the movie files are more than 5 gig but dvd-x copy cannot. any insite greatly appreciated from moderators to

I think you are getting some of your numbers mixed up here.

DVD-5 discs = 4.7GB
DVD-9 discs = 9.4GB

DVD-r discs = 4.7GB

Now I'm not very familiar with DVD Decrypter, other than knowing it's a ripping program. It does no re encoding.

About the only thing I can think of is that DVD Decrypter is a bit more efficient in the way it strips out some of the unwanted streams.

Anyway, I find that very few movies these days will fit on a single DVD-r without some form of re encoding.

Hope that helps.

I've been using DVDdecrypter for about 4 weeks now and I haven't found a way to make it place a dual-layer or >4.3gb movie on one DVD disc yet, (not by intself anyways). Are you sure you read that about decrypter correctly?
Can you point out some of the forums/threads? I sure like to look into it, as I'd like to be able to place >4.3gb movies on one disc without having to re-encode myself.
Re-encoding is the only way to do it that I've come across in my research.

yes rencoding is included but this defeats the purpose because the dvd quality will go down somewhat

you cannot fit a square peg in a round hole,
if tou have a dvd that is bigger than 4.37GB You cant fit it on one disc it is physically impossible, Im not going down the line of whether the end has been chopped or the subtitles ripped out, once all the unneccesarry data has been stripped and if it is above 4.37gb it cannot fit on one disc, it needs to be re-encoded to shrink the video file down or split the dvd to two discs :0)
