Cold Fear (Pal) says no controller plugged in?

Hiyas!

I have a back up of Cold Fear (PAL) and I tried to install it on my hard drive using hdadvance. It boots up fine but it keeps saying there's no controller plugged in?

I tried using modes, I pressed all buttons, tried different controllers. There has been some mentions of Prince of Persia : Sands of Times having similar problem.

Also some people say after they press on the 'start' button it unlocked itself? But that doesn't work for me :(

I have a v7 ps2... any idea what is causing this and how to fix it?
