xvid movies freezes my computer

i have a little problem. all movies encoded with xvid keep freezing my computer (under windows os).
tried different versions of drivers (and from different sources: nvidia origs, omega drivers or from leadtek - the producers of the board), tried different codecs, tried different versions of windows. nothing worked.
with another video board i don't have this problem.
neither under linux i don't have this problem.
movies encoded with divx, (s)vcd, dvd play just fine.

so i guess it has something to do with the win drivers, codecs or the chipset...

if anyone has a hint about what could go wrong... please share with me

specs:
mb - ga-7vaxp
video - leadtek a310td (fx5600)
ram - 2x512 kinmax 333 mhz
cpu - athlon xp 2400+
