I used to be involved in Film Post Production and believe it or not a lot of main stream movies nowadays are actually edited digitally as opposed to cutting and splicing.

Although formatting can be done on dvd's, it is extremely difficult to come anywhere near close to pulling it off.

The first big hurdle... Apect Ratios
Movies are setup with a certain apature (height/width) for the lens they were shot with. Changing this will create a pleathora of problems for you.
For Example. Take a photo or picture that is 800x600(pixels) and try to put is a your background on your desktop PC that is running at 1024 x 768(pixels). When you apply the picture it stays at the initial aspect ratio. Now set you settings for the same picture to stretch and what happens......

Picture quality is degraded sometimes so poorly you can hardly tell what the image is, and even if you can you start to see the pixels because you are simply viewing a magnified picture.

Before I left that line of work (1) studio I knew of was working on software that would be available to the public. God only knows how long that will be.

The cost of a production studio changing aspect ratios for a movie shot in wide screen (letter box) to Fullscreen is stunningly high. But they make that money back on rentals....

Sorry I got too in depth there, I'm sorry.

Only logical answer I can give right now is go buy the other format... It sucks but what ya gonna do. Maybe I'll be nice and make some phone calls and see if anything new has developed on that front.

I have a sony widescreen tv. However when ripping and burning dvd's i notice that the black band and the top and bottom of the screen in much larger than normal, is this because i am using dvdshrink to compress the film ?

Typically, no. The possible reason that it might be enlarging the bands at the top and bottom of the screen is because those bands aren't added after filming. They are there because of the type of lense the film is shot with. Black doesn't pixelate like other colors in the spectrum. When you run a burned movie on a wide screen the processor (or imaging system) in your dvd player will try and format your screen to the best possible clarity. Since black doesn't pixelate as much the bands on look enlarged, in reality they are being stretched to a degree, but your eyes can't typically notice that. So, in sumation, the bands are only being stretched, but you can't notice color warping or pixelation.

Hope that helps some.

WHY do you want to make a widescreen movie into fullscreen anyway?
