I noticed that the older Toshiba dvd rom in my laptop does a better job than the newer NEC 2500A dvd burner in my home computer at ripping scratched disks. I have two of my disks that I could rip with the Toshiba which wouldn't rip with the NEC.
I use DVD decrypter to rip. Sometimes it slows way down when it encounters a scratch. Sometimes it stops and won't go any further. I don't really want to skip errors, as I think this will pass over data and leave blank or choppy spots on the video.
Is there better ripping software for scratched originals than DVD decrypter?
Everyone's had the cyclic redundancy error and hangups whther it's with DVDXCopy, DVD Decrypter, or DVD Shrink. You can try the toothpaste trick, the refrigerator trick, or just washing it and buffing it. After that, all you can do is just set Decrypter to pass over errors once and skip and later see if that caused any major choppiness in the movie. Be careful though. I noticed that after Decrypter made several attempts to read the errors, my recorder switched from DMA mode to PIO mode. The only way to fix it was to uninstall the Secondary IDE and reinstall it.
